What are student roll numbers and why use them?
Roll numbers uniquely identify students within a batch; learn how prefixes, sort order and privileges work and where they appear.
Roll numbers are unique identification numbers that can be assigned to students at admission or later. A roll number is unique within a batch: two students of the same batch cannot have the same roll number.
Roll number prefixes
To avoid students of different batches having the same roll number, you can set a common prefix for all roll numbers in each batch. The prefix also helps you identify which course and batch a student belongs to.
How it works
- Choose the sort order. Before assigning roll numbers, choose how students are sorted in your institution: by Admission no., First Name or Last Name.
- Set a prefix for each course. The prefix set for a course is applied automatically to all batches under that course, and to all students in each batch.
- Change the prefix per batch if needed. If you don’t want all batches of a course to share the same prefix, you can change it for each batch.
Two different courses or batches can have the same prefix, but we recommend a unique prefix for each course and batch to avoid confusion. The prefix cannot be edited for individual students.
Note: The administrator or a privileged employee (with the Manage student roll numbers privilege) can assign and manage student roll numbers.
