Marking and tracking student attendance
Why attendance matters, how the Attendance module works, and who can mark student attendance.
Tracking student attendance helps an institution to:

- Evaluate its quality
- Make timely administrative and financial decisions
- Plan events such as fire drills and other activities
- Spot trends and plan action to improve an individual’s or a group’s attendance
How the Attendance module works
The module makes it easy for teachers to mark attendance in class:
- All students are considered present by default; you only mark absences.
- Absence can be for the full day or half a day (forenoon or afternoon).
- Teachers can enter the reason for absence.
- Optional Rapid Attendance lets teachers mark absences quickly without a reason.
- When a student is marked absent, an SMS is sent to the student and their emergency contact (if set up).
Attendance reports can be generated per batch, and students can see their own attendance for the current year from their account.
Note: If your institution marks attendance subject-wise, create a timetable for each batch first.
Who can mark attendance?
The administrator or an employee with the Student Attendance Register privilege, with these conditions for employees:
| Attendance type | Who can mark |
|---|---|
| Daily | Only the employee(s) assigned as the batch tutor. |
| Subject-wise | Only the employee(s) assigned to that subject. |
Note: With subject-wise attendance, a swapped (substitute) teacher can mark attendance for that subject on that day only.
